The John Bamford Primary School - Sports Funding 2022 – 2023
What is the PE and Sports Premium Funding?
In the 2022-23 academic year, primary schools will be provided with government funding to improve the provision of high quality physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is being allocated to head teachers as a ring-fenced payment and can only be spent on PE and sport in schools, allowing for flexibility to use it in the way that works best for their pupils.
How is the funding used at John Bamford Primary School?
At John Bamford, we follow the national strategy that aims for all pupils:
- To become physically literate
- To have the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle
- To enjoy lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
To achieve this, we will:
- Ensure a child-led, high quality PE curriculum is delivered to all pupils.
- Provide extra-curricular activities outside of school hours, including a wide range of opportunities to represent the school in a variety of sports.
- Invest in new equipment and facilities.
- Develop young leaders who facilitate sporting opportunities for others.
Below is a more detailed breakdown of how the sports funding has been used to achieve these goals.

Future Ideas and Development areas to achieve our 2021 vision. |
The children have taken part in many enrichment days including taster sessions and competition days which has raised the profile of PE and Sport. Activities pupils have enjoyed and found they want to continue with, has led to a sustainable attitude change and increased present and future participation.
The development of lunchtimes, interventions and additional extra-curricular clubs has led to increased participation, fitness levels and enjoyment for pupils. This has been particularly apparent for previously non-active pupils and a big focus has been on providing the opportunity for pupils to try alternative activities and sports.
Pupils have been trained to lead and organise events in school alongside the staff. Staff and pupil confidence and ability to lead events and activities is sustainable and will be something the school will continue to build upon.
An increased number of pupils have been involved in competitive situations at Level 1,2 & 3. This has meant that there have been more children participating in school competition and increased competition between other schools as normality begins to return for our intra and inter school competitions.
School has achieved the Gold School Games mark for the sixth year running. This shows the consistency of provision on offer within the schools with regards to the competitive and wider sports offered.
We have involved parents in understanding the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle via newsletters which includes a ‘healthy recipes’ section each week.

Long-Term Vision for Physical Education
At The John Bamford Primary School we believe that physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. We aim for both teachers and children to be aware of its importance. We strive to provide the broad and balanced programme of physical education we believe every child should have; with activities designed to be enjoyable, vigorous, purposeful and regular. Through providing positive experiences, a lifelong interest in physical activity is encouraged. We value the importance of a varied curriculum experience. Our aim is to increase participation in physical activity outside of the two hours offered as part of the curriculum. In order to achieve this vision, we strive to offer varied opportunities for engagement in physical activity at lunchtimes and after school which are tailored to the children’s interests.

Our PE Leads and Assistant Sport Lead are continuing to increase their knowledge within PE and are becoming increasingly more confident to lead staff, provide CPD to other members of staff. We continue to be aware of opportunities beneficial for pupils through information gained from meetings and networking. Assistant Sport Lead works alongside staff when teaching PE which is useful CPD for staff. The Assistant Sport Lead organises and attends swimming lessons with children and encourages confidence from non-swimmers by accompanying them in the swimming pool. As a result, children in Year 5 and 6 are increasing in confidence when swimming and some children have now met the expected standard. A new PE assessment tool has been designed by our Assistant Sport Lead which will be implemented in the academic year of 2022/23, to ensure that children make progress across all areas of PE. |
