Universal Free School Meals
Your child is entitled to a free school meal during their time in Reception and Key Stage 1 (that is in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes). This entitlement is not dependent upon any other circumstances, ALL children within the UK are automatically entitled to their free meals. As a school, we very much hope that you will see this as an opportunity for your child to receive a healthy and tasty meal to be eaten with their peers during lunchtime in school. Some parents worry that their child is too ‘picky’ for a hot school meal, but we tend to find that by eating with friends and seeing others trying new tastes and options, that this greatly improves a child’s eating choices very quickly. Our Catering Manager regularly offers taster pots to help your child try to find new things that they may like.

Current Menu
My name is Rebecca Saad and I am the Catering Manager at The John Bamford Primary School.
It is very important to us to give the children healthy food, whether that is the fruit provided at break time or offering them salad with their lunch instead of vegetables. We encourage every child to eat at least 1 of their 5 a day at school. We always have Baked beans, at least 1 type of vegetable and minimum of 3 salad items for the children to choose from.
We often have themed days where we will change the menu to go with a special day, such as Valentine’s Day, where we have had meatballs and pasta with love heart cookies. Hot Dogs and Beef Burgers for Bonfire Night, and an Afternoon Tea style picnic on Royal Occasions. We get ideas for themed days from some of the older children within the school.
The Head Boys and Head Girls communicate with me on designing a new menu.
As a kitchen, we are all aware of allergies/intolerances. I communicate with parents on the menus we use, and help them with the foods their children can have. Most recipes can be adapted to suit almost all allergies and intolerances. Little items, such as using Gluten free flour in puddings, can replace a normal flour to make them allergy friendly desserts.
WE WELCOME YOUR FEEDBACK
If you have any concerns or questions about the menus, allergies or intolerances then please ask the office for a meeting with Mrs Saad.
We welcome any feedback, positive or negative, as we continue to improve and develop our catering. Please contact office@johnbamford.staffs.sch.uk or 01889 228689.
We are very proud to announce that we were awarded a 5 star ‘Food Hygiene’ rating in a recent inspection of our school kitchen in July 2022. This is an outstanding result and something that we are very pleased about. We would like to thank Mrs. Saad and the rest of the catering team for working so hard and for ensuring our school meals are prepared to such a high standard. Well done everyone!
