Mathematics Expectations

When teaching mathematics at The John Bamford Primary School, we intend to provide a curriculum which caters for the needs of all individuals and provides them with the necessary and relevant skills and knowledge for them to become successful in their future. We aim to prepare them for a successful working life. We incorporate sustained levels of challenge through varied and high-quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving to meet the goal of ‘True Fluency’. Pupils are required to explore maths in depth, using mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their workings. A wide range of mathematical resources are used and pupils are taught to show their workings in a concrete (concrete is the “doing” stage, using concrete objects to model problems), pictorial (pictorial is the “seeing” stage, using representations of the objects to model problems), and abstract (abstract is the “symbolic” stage, where children are able to use abstract symbols), form wherever suitable. They are taught to explain their choice of methods and develop their mathematical reasoning skills. We encourage resilience and acceptance that challenge is often a necessary step in learning. Our rigorous curriculum allows children to better make sense of the world around them relating the pattern between mathematics and everyday life.

Times Tables 

In the new Primary National Curriculum, times tables up to 12 x 12 are something which children are required to know and understand by Year 4.  To help with this, we use Number Sense and Times Table Rockstars so children and teachers know where pupils are up to in their learning of times tables.

When it comes to times tables, speed and accuracy are important – the more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations.

To be secure in your times tables, you need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12×12 in less than 6 seconds! We teach times tables daily through Number Sense assessments, games, written assessments and songs. Daily Number Sense assessment informs our whole school times table tracker to ensure all pupils are making progress.

Year 2: 25 and 10

Year 3: 2, 34, 5, 8 and 10

Year 4: 2, 3, 4, 5, 67, 8, 91112

Year 5: all facts to 12 x 12

Year 6: all facts to 12 x 12

The objectives that are taught in each year group are taken from our Transferrable Concept Grids in Mathematics, which links closely to the National Curriculum.
